TPB: Umbrella Academy trade paperback

by Clan Destine on June 2, 2008

Coming next month (July 2nd) is the Umbrella Academy Trade Paperback book (aka Volume One: Apocalypse Suite) from Dark Horse.

Highlights include a forward by Grant Morrison, who Gerard Way says was the influence for The Umbrella Academy. Morrison has been quoted to describe this epic series as: “An ultraviolet psychedelic sherbet bomb of wit and ideas. The superheroes of the 21st century are here at last…” Way finds it “very amazing and generous of him to do [the forward].”

You will be surprised to know that Way decided not to write any additional material for the book. The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite’s writers are artist Gabriel Bá and editor Scott Allie.

“I felt like I’d kind of written quite a bit, and I said a lot, and I wanted other people to be able to say what they were feeling during making the series,” Way said.

Additional features include an expanded sketchbook section.

“It looks very cool, it looks like pages ripped out of my sketchbook and then you see some of Gabriel’s studies for these characters, and there’s commentary on those.”

This book also includes the first six-issue series, an expanded sketchbook section featuring work by Bá, Jean, and Way, commentary from these artists, out-of-print short stories, and the story from Free Comic Book Day 2007 (and not 2008 as the copyright page of the book says in error), and The Umbrella Academy short story originally featured on Dark Horse’s website.

NEWSRAMA calls it, “. . . flawless. . . stylish, imaginative. . . ”

Pre-order it now and save 20%.

A hardcover LIMITED-EDITION collection with even more extras is also available for pre-order.

Just a heads up guys. This has already been released. Picked it up last weekend at my local shop, and I gotta say it’s incredible. It includes all six issues, with cover art without the logo and barcodes and what-have-you. The extended sketchbook of Gerard’s original designs and Gabriel’s drawings is beauitful and exquisite. It also includes the Free Comic Book Day story “But the past ain’t through with you…” and the Dark Horse website story “Mon dieu!” Alas, it does not also house the Dark Horse Presents: story of the Kraken, but that will be included in the tpb of the first six issues of DHP: coming out in September. Also, tfaw.com has begun taking preorders for the official UA umbrella, and it looks beautiful, which should also come out in September.

im so excited

i do agree, the umbrella academy has definately introduced the superhero’s of the 21st century

im glad that gerard and gabriel are actually creating something new, apposed to the movies and tv shows of today that just feed off of older comic books series (etc.)

im very excited for this next issue as i havent read any of dallas yet – i was waiting to buy the entire of volume two, as i did with the first volume of the umbrella academy : Apocalypse Suite
